Intent to Establish a Home Education Program Summary of Parents' Responsibilities
The Santa Rosa County School District does not provide a curriculum to home education students; this the parent's sole responsibility. In addition, parents of home education students serve as their student's guidance counselor.
If parents are interested in online learning for their home education student, they may take advantage of our district's partnership with Florida Virtual School. Click here to see all FLVS course options. These online courses are free of charge to residents of Santa Rosa County. If interested, once you have submitted the intent form and proof of residency to Vikki Williamson, you will need to log on to www.flvs.net to create an account for your student. When prompted to choose a provider, home education students should choose Florida Virtual School. Once you have established an FLVS profile account, then FLVS notifies Vikki Williamson to confirm enrollment. Since parents of home education students are considered the student's guidance counselor, it's the parents' responsibility to provide guidance verification for online courses.
Two Very Important Notes for High School Students: 1. Home education students are considered NON DIPLOMA SEEKING students with the Santa Rosa County School District and WILL NOT receive a diploma or graduate from the school district at the conclusion of the 12th grade year.
2. It is suggested that a home education student who plans to return to a brick and mortar high school should take all high school courses online so that credit can be verified. Parents who are providing their own curriculum for their high school student should be advised that they may not receive credit and may have to repeat courses based on the outcome of a portfolio review evaluated by a panel of district personnel.
If your home education student desires to become a diploma-seeking student, please contact Vikki Williamson at (850) 981-7860, ext. 0 to withdraw your intent to establish a home education program. To access this form, click here. Then, you should do one of the following:
1. Contact your student’s zoned brick and mortar school to enroll your student in the traditional school setting. Not sure which brick and mortar school you are zoned for based on your physical address? Click here to go to the School Zone Locator which will allow you to enter your home address and find out which school your child is zoned to attend.
2. Contact Santa Rosa Online Academy, the public virtual school option for Santa Rosa County students, by calling Paula Lowrimore, the school counselor, at (850) 981-7860 to enroll your student in the district’s full-time virtual instructional program. Enrollment windows are available each summer for the fall semester and again in December for the spring semester. Consideration for midyear enrollment will be given to students in grades 6-12 who meet the following requirements: - 2.75 cumulative grade point average or higher - Passing/proficient level on previous year’s/most current state testing data (if scores are available) - Fewer than 10 absences (excused and unexcused) in the first semester - School counselor approval
